EventMingle is a social media app for community events.

MVP Product design by Massiel Lopez

  • A startup company has launched a product that helps people meet new friends. The goal of the product is to create a social user experience that will help users get out and do activities in person.

  • The peeps at EventMingle discovered the number of people who say they are going to an event is significantly higher than the number of people who actually attend to the events.

  • The company reached out to me so that we can come up with a solution that will help them reduce the amount of NO-SHOWS for the events

  • Introduce cost-effective incentives that resonate with the brand's caring and familiar personality to motivate users to commit to and attend events?

Address the gap between RSVPs and actual attendees, boosting the conversion of accepted invites to event participants while maintaining a friendly user experience?

  • New to Denver

  • 34 years old

  • Middle class

Interests

  • Flexibility: The app should allow them to easily change their RSVP status based on their mood and availability.

  • Community Support: Alex feels more comfortable attending events where they know at least one more person

Goals

  • Meet like-minded individuals

  • Discover events that match their interests

  • Community engagement

Pain points

  • Busy Schedule: They may have to cancel plans due to unexpected deadlines.

  • Commitment Guilt: RSVPing for events and not attending can sometimes lead to guilt or anxiety.

  • Social Anxiety: Alex's social anxiety can make attending events alone, a bit challenging at times.

Ideate

  • Offer premium ticket option for VIP users

  • Have user join the event forum

  • Provide rewards: certificates of attendance, loyalty points

  • Push for event calendar reminders

  • Invite a friend

  • Issue a fee for no-shows

  • Personalized event content

  • Educate the user about the no-show policies

  • Issue certificates of attendance

  • Display no-show policies during the RSVP process

Initial ideas

To build a Check-In flow in which the user can invite a buddy to attend the event.  By checking into the event, the user will be rewarded loyalty points and can receive more for each person they invite.

Solution

Invite a buddy, receive points to cash out for rewards!!!

The user needs to be able to check into an event upon arrival and receive their loyalty points for attending the event.

The color palette was inspired by the company’s brand attributes:

  • Caring

  • Familiar

  • Humorous

  • Optimistic

Design system

The soft blues provide that caring feeling and with a pop of yellows and pinks, that bit of playfulness and optimism come through.

For the font, I opted for SPARTAN, it is easy to read and very minimal

Usability testing

I conducted 2 rounds of usability testing to help identify potential issues and answer questions that might arise later on. The test was applied to 5 different individuals in 15-minute sessions.

Learnings

This project has been a unique and enriching experience, particularly because it involved enhancing an existing mobile app. The challenge of finding solutions within an established framework provided valuable insights into user preferences and behaviors.

By recognizing the power of rewards and applying gamification principles, I aimed to create a more compelling and user-friendly experience. I am hopeful that these improvements will not only meet the company's expectations but also contribute positively to the overall user engagement and satisfaction with the app.
